The resolute Yorkie’s life could only be saved by having her entire front leg amputated.

Besides the savaging, poor Mitzi had also been badly neglected by breeders.

Heartwarming footage shows how Mitzi is now a bundle of mischief, scampering around without a care on her three remaining legs.

Mitzi’s story has been detailed by the Mayhew Animal Home, a London-based charity that has been saving pets’ lives for 130 years.

When Mayhew animal welfare officers discovered Mitzi she was in a horrendous state, with a fracture to her left shoulder blade that had become badly infected.

She had been neglected and left to fend for herself by irresponsible breeders, say the charity, and could barely walk after being attacked by the other dog.

Blood was matted down one side and she looked terrified. She was also lethargic, dehydrated and running a high temperature

Mayhew Vet Dr Áine Macguire, said: “We instantly started treating her for shock. She was placed on intravenous fluids and was given pain relief and antibiotics.

“Over her left shoulder there was a lot of matted blood, so we clipped and cleaned the wounds, which showed extensive and painful bruising.

“We booked her in for an examination and further flushing of the wounds under sedation when her condition was more stable.”

Mitzi’s health deteriorated during the 24-hour intensive care.

The bone and surrounding tissue were so severely infected there was only one course but to amputate her leg.

It has not stopped her bounding forwards.

Dr Macguire said: “She has coped really well with walking on three legs and it doesn’t seem to bother her at all. Three-legged dogs can still live happy and fulfilling lives.”

Mitzi is not only getting use to having three legs but also a new home and name. She has been adopted by Helle Hammonds who has called her Mini.

She said: “Mini has settled in really well and gets on great with our other dog Missy. She is incredibly affectionate and loves receiving cuddles.

“Her disability doesn’t stop her from doing anything and she is forever trying to sit on my lap.”

As Mini enjoys her new life, the Mayhew Animal Home warns that dogs are still falling victim to unscrupulous breeders.

The charity’s animal welfare manager, Zoe Edwards, said: “Unfortunately, we see a lot of unwanted dogs as they are bred purely to be sold for profit or used as a breeding machine.

“When they end up injured or not sold, the breeders abandon and dump them when they are no longer wanted.

“We ask that owners think responsibly about where they get their pets from and consider adopting a rescue dog.”
