At the 2020 Emmys, ‘Schitt’s Creek’ made history by scoring a record-breaking nine awards
Schitt’s Creek started out as a small Canadian show and ended up breaking a record at the 2020 Emmys for the most wins for a comedy in one season. The hit sitcom followed a wealthy family that lost everything overnight and learned to navigate small-town life — and two of its stars, Eugene Levy and his son Dan Levy, are also its creators and writers.
The Levys made the decision to end the series after season 6 so that it could end on a high note. As Eugene told The New York Times in January 2020, “Isn’t that the perfect way to go?”
Since Schitt’s Creek wrapped in 2020, each cast member has pursued a variety of impressive projects, ranging from documenting travels around the globe to releasing a graphic novel. And there’s always a possibility they’ll come together again for some form of a reunion.
“My hope is that one day we can all get together,” Dan told PEOPLE in June 2022. “I see these people all the time. We’re in constant contact with each other. So the love is there. The desire to work together is there, and the desire to tell more stories is there. I think it just comes down to making sure that it’s the right story to tell.”
Here’s everything the cast of Schitt’s Creek has been up to since they left the beloved town.
Eugene Levy
Eugene Levy, who is known for roles in American Pie, National Lampoon’s Vacation and Cheaper By the Dozen 2, was not only one of the major stars of Schitt’s Creek — he also wrote the show with his son, Dan. The father and son, who are from Toronto, dreamed up Eugene’s beloved character Johnny Rose, a rich CEO who becomes a small business owner. When they created the show, the duo were excited about the idea of a dramatic fall from riches to rags, per Vanity Fair.
After Schitt’s Creek, the actor challenged himself with a different kind of series, The Reluctant Traveler. The Apple TV+ show premiered in February 2023 and features his travels to Costa Rica, Italy, South Africa, Japan and more. Eugene told PEOPLE, “I still don’t think I’m an adventurous person, but I’m doing the best I can. I think this show is good for me.”
In addition to his global adventures, Eugene also appeared in Kacey Musgraves‘ Star-Crossed: The Film and in a 2022 Nissan Super Bowl commercial alongside Marvel actors Danai Gurira, Dave Bautista and Brie Larson. He and Dan also co-wrote a behind-the-scenes Schitt’s Creek coffee table book in October 2021.
The comedian maintains a close relationship with his kids — his daughter, Sarah, also appeared on Schitt’s Creek. “It’s one of the true joys of my life that I got the chance to work on a day-to-day basis with my children,” he told the Guardian in March 2023. “I always used to envy friends in different professions … with family businesses.”
Catherine O’Hara
By the time she starred as former daytime soap opera star Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek, Catherine O’Hara was already a TV and film veteran famous for projects like Beetlejuice, the Home Alone movies and The Nightmare Before Christmas. In the documentary Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: A Schitt’s Creek Farewell, it was revealed that she originally turned down the role of Moira, but Dan urged Eugene to keep trying.
When she won a Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a television series in 2021, the Toronto-born actress praised Eugene and Dan for creating “an inspiring, funny, beautiful family love story in which they let me wear 100 wigs and speak like an alien.” She added, “It’s an experience I will forever hold dear to my heart.”
Since her days playing the wig-bearing matriarch, O’Hara has lent her voice to animated projects like the 2021 film Extinct and the series The Last Kids on Earth and Central Park. The actress’s Pixar film Elemental released in June 2023. She reunited with Dan at Paris Fashion Week in March 2023, and he shared a photo of the two on Instagram.
O’Hara has been married to production designer Bo Welch since 1992, and they share two sons. In November 2021, she joked to E! News that she forces them to watch Home Alone every year.
Later this year, O’Hara will reprise her Beetlejuice role in the film’s sequel, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
Dan Levy
Though Dan Levy previously had success as host of The Hills: The After Show for MTV Canada and on Degrassi: The Next Generation, Schitt’s Creek was his breakout role. The actor partnered with his father to create the show, in which he starred as David Rose, the cynical and hilarious owner of Rose Apothecary.
In April 2020, Dan told Variety that his idea for the series came during a cafe brainstorming session. “I had come out of MTV, I had made a name for myself,” the actor recalled. “But that, in a way, made me feel okay with going to my dad for this idea. So I went to him with this idea of a wealthy family losing their money and said, ‘Do you want to work on this with me?’ And he said, ‘Yes.’ “
Since wrapping his hit show, Dan has worked on a variety of on-screen projects and off-screen ventures. In October 2022, he announced his directorial debut with the Netflix comedy Good Grief. He also stepped into unscripted TV with his HBO Max cooking competition show The Big Brunch, which aired in November 2022.
Most recently, Dan starred in the HBO series The Idol alongside The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp. He also appeared in season 4 of Netflix’s Sex Education in September 2023.
Annie Murphy
Before Schitt’s Creek came along, Annie Murphy had “$3 in [her] bank account” and “hadn’t worked in close to two years,” according to her January 2020 interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show. Fortunately, the perfect role came along at the perfect time, and the Ottawa-raised actress began playing Alexis Rose, a socialite who learns to embrace small-town life.
In 2018, Murphy revealed to Vulture that she had also auditioned for the part of Stevie Budd. “But as soon as I met Emily [Hampshire], I was like, ‘Why on earth would these people entertain the idea of anyone else playing this part?’ ” the actress recalled. “She blows it out of the water.”
The actress has been married to Canadian musician Menno Versteeg since 2011, and the pair co-wrote Murphy’s character’s song, “A Little Bit Alexis.” He called the musical collaboration a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Over the past few years, she’s continued to star on TV shows like Russian Doll and Kevin Can F**k Himself, as well as the film Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, which was released in June 2023.
She also starred on an episode of Black Mirror for the series’ season six in 2023.
Emily Hampshire
While she was playing the sarcastic Rosebud Motel employee-turned-owner Stevie Budd on Schitt’s Creek, Emily Hampshire was also working on the SyFy drama 12 Monkeys. Since both shows ended, she’s kept up a busy filming schedule.e
The Montreal-born actress has taken on the role of a governess in the Epix horror series Chapelwaite and the role of a scientist and oil company representative in the Amazon Prime Video drama The Rig. She’s also worked on the films The End of Sex, Self Reliance and Bloody Hell.
In September 2021, Hampshire revealed to pop star Demi Lovato that a Schitt’s Creek scene helped her understand her sexuality. “[David Rose] says, ultimately he likes the wine, not the label, and that he’s pansexual. I had never heard the word pansexual before,” she shared on the podcast 4D with Demi Lovato. She added that when she asked Dan what her sexual orientation was, he responded: “You’re pansexual. Don’t you watch our show?”
Though the actress is recognized as an LGBTQ icon following her performance on Schitt’s Creek, she told PEOPLE in June 2021 that she wouldn’t give herself that label. “I’m Canadian, I could never see myself [that way], or say that I am an icon within this space!” she joked. “We apologize a lot, and mainly for our existence.”
When she’s not acting, she’s storytelling in other ways. Hampshire released her first graphic novel, Amelia Aierwood: Basic Witch, in April 2023. The story is about a famous family of witches who star in their own reality show, and it’s partially inspired by the Kardashians, per Entertainment Weekly.
Chris Elliott
Chris Elliott, known for There’s Something About Mary, Groundhog Day and Saturday Night Live, starred as Roland Schitt, the fourth-generation mayor and namesake of Schitt’s Creek. Since the CBC series ended, the actor, who was born in New York City to comedian Bob Elliott of Bob and Ray, has continued to pursue comedic projects. He played the father of a psychic in the one-season Hulu sitcom Maggie, and he was also part of the 2021 comedy Christmas vs. the Walters.
Elliott is married to fellow actor Paula Niedert Elliott, and they share two children, Bridey Elliott and Abby Elliott. His daughters are also actors, and the family worked together on the 2018 dramedy Clara’s Ghost.
Noah Reid
On Schitt’s Creek, Noah Reid played Patrick Brewer, David’s husband and business partner. When PEOPLE asked what other character he would’ve played, Reid answered, “I would go with Roland because he’s got a cool mullet.”
After the hit comedy ended, the Toronto-born actor played a darker role in Amazon Prime Video’s Western thriller, Outer Range. Reid also made his Broadway debut in The Minutes in April 2022 and released his third album, Adjustments, two months later. The actor also narrated the Audible podcast Sleep Sound with Noah Reid.
Reid married Clare Stone, a nurse and former actress, in July 2020, and they welcomed their first baby two years later. On Nov. 27, 2022, Reid posted a birthday tribute for his wife. “My whole world,” he captioned the photo of Stone and their baby on the beach. “Happy 30 my love.”
Tim Rozon
These days, Tim Rozon, who played hippie farmer Mutt Schitt on Schitt’s Creek, is still working with his costar Sarah Levy. The two star in the dramatic SyFy series SurrealEstate as real estate agents who handle haunted houses.
Per Deadline, the show was canceled after the first season but the network reversed its cancellation May 2022 — and the second season premiered in 2023.
In 2022, the actor worked on several films, including Christmas in Wolf Creek, Dakota and Terror Train. He starred opposite Jodie Sweetin in the Lifetime movie Merry Swissmas.
According to CBC, Rozon lives in Montreal, where he co-owns two restaurants, Garde Manger and Le Bremner.
Sarah Levy
Sarah Levy, who starred as the bubbly Café Tropical owner Twyla Sands, has had many professional and personal developments in the last few years.
In the SyFy series SurrealEstate, the Toronto native joined forces with fellow Schitt’s Creek alum Tim Rozon. Sarah shared an Instagram photo with her SurrealEstate costars in December 2022. “So happy #surrealestate is back for season 2,” she wrote in the caption.
In October 2022, Sarah celebrated her first wedding anniversary with her actor and producer husband, Graham Outerbridge. The couple welcomed their first child, James Eugene Outerbridge, in July 2022. Sarah explained her son’s name to PEOPLE in September 2022. “Honestly, I could not imagine any other middle name for James,” she said. “It was just a nice way to honor my dad.”
Dustin Milligan
Schitt’s Creek’s resident veterinarian Ted Mullens was brought to life by Dustin Milligan, who is originally from Yellowknife, Canada.
In April 2021, he looked back at his career in an interview with BuzzFeed. Asked what audiences may have missed while watching Schitt’s Creek, Milligan said: “I’m a human being and that means that I sweat sometimes. There’s a lot of scenes in Schitt’s Creek where you may not notice this, but I’ve got paper towels crammed into my armpits.”
Since Schitt’s Creek ended, the actor has taken on film, television and writing projects. In 2022, he starred in The People We Hate at the Wedding alongside Kristen Bell. Milligan also played a dogsitter in the 2022 comedy Mack & Rita and a journalist in the short-lived Peacock series Rutherford Falls.
Milligan is also focused on scripts of his own. In January 2023, he shared on Instagram that his script Legend of the Sky Drifters, or Murph and Alex Go To Time-Jail was a sci-fi and fantasy category winner in the 2022 Big Break Screenwriting Contest.
Karen Robinson
Sarcastic town council member Ronnie Lee was portrayed by Karen Robinson. Since the show ended, the British-Canadian actress has played dramatic roles on shows like Peacock’s The Calling. “I cannot believe that I have been able to make this kind of transition from Ronnie in Schitt’s Creek to Captain Davies in The Calling,” she reflected to KTLA in November 2022.
Robinson also played a cop in the CBC police dramedy Pretty Hard Cases from 2021 to 2023 and a sheriff in the 2022 Netflix series Echoes. In the third season of the ABC drama A Million Little Things, she played a widow named Florence.
Jennifer Robertson
Jennifer Robertson, known for her work in Twitches, Hello, Goodbye and Everything In Between, portrayed Jocelyn Schitt, Schitt’s Creek High School’s eccentric and a cappella-loving history teacher. These days, the Vancouver-born actress is busy playing the title characters’ neighbor Ellen Baker on Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia. Robertson learned American Sign Language for the role, as her character’s husband is deaf. “Thank you for your endless patience helping me learn my lines, and thanks for all the laughter and fun on set,” she wrote on Instagram next to the sign for “I love you.”
In January 2023, she shared an Instagram photo of herself on set sporting a cowboy hat, blonde braids and a striped T-shirt. “Everyone upset with how Max is treating Ginny in season 2, needs to refocus that anger on Ellen’s wardrobe and accessories for the Bachelorette Party,” Robertson joked.
