Paul Lucas Allen, 18, jumped onto the running board on a friend’s Ford Bronco before “falling onto the roadway striking his head,” according to police

A high school senior from Ohio has died after falling from a moving vehicle while playing a game of tag with a friend.

The incident occurred on Saturday, April 13, around 3:40 p.m. local time on Crown Colony Drive in Avon, according to a news release from police obtained by PEOPLE.

Police say the 18-year-old victim had jumped onto the footboard on the driver’s side of a friend’s Ford Bronco before “falling onto the roadway [and] striking his head.”

The teen and the driver of the Bronco “knew each other” and were “involved in a game of tag with squirt guns” at the time of the deadly incident, authorities add.

The driver of the Bronco was apparently returning to his home when he spotted his friend coming out “from his driveway,” who then jumped on the running board of the vehicle.

Afterward, the driver seemingly “proceeded forward,” and “the victim fell backwards from the running board.”

A woman was found performing CPR on the teen when first responders arrived at the scene, according to the APD.

The victim was transported to St. John Westshore Hospital, where he died from his injuries a short time later.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victim as Paul Lucas Allen of Avon.

Allen, who went by “Luke,” was a senior at Avon High School and was “looking forward to attending Northern Michigan University in the Fall to study business,” according to his obituary. 

The teen also “enjoyed spending his time outdoors” and had several hobbies, including “fishing, boating, snowboarding, and four-wheeling with his family and his many friends,” as well as going out of the family’s boat and bonding with “his two beloved dogs, Blue and Chubb.” 

Allen was described as “the biggest helper with the biggest heart” who “would have done anything to help a loved one.” He is survived by both of his parents and his three siblings.

“Luke had a ‘fiery’ soul that was contagious and put a smile on everyone’s face,” his obituary read. “He was the light of his family; he completed his family.”

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The Crash Reconstruction Unit is handling the investigation and will turn over their findings to the local prosecutor’s officer for review, according to police.
