It might seem like just yesterday that The Big Bang Theory was cancelled but the show actually ended five years ago. Despite still being very popular the show ended after its 12th season but the real reason it ended caused a lot of drama among the cast of The Big Bang Theory.
It turns out the network didn’t cancel the series, but the decision to end filming was influenced by one of the key cast members. When it came time to renew their contracts for another season of the show Jim Parsons declined and decided he wanted to leave the show. He had a lot of reasons behind his decisions and whilst some cast members thought it was the right time for the show to end, others weren’t too happy about the decision.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jim explained that he felt like there was nothing more that the show could depict. He admitted: “It felt like we have been able to do this for so many years now, it doesn’t feel like there is anything left on the table. Not that we couldn’t keep doing it, but it feels like we’ve chewed all the meat off this bone.”
Another factor that went into his decision to leave was reminiscing about his father passing away at an early age. His father passed away aged 52 and he realised he would be 46 years old when the show ended. This gave him a bit of a wake up call as he thought: “I think there’s other things I need to try and do.”
But not all of the cast were completely on board with the idea of ending the hit series, with Kaley Cuoco feeling especially shocked. She was called into creator Chuck Lorre’s office and thought they were going to discuss the 13th season, but instead, she was told the show was going to end.
She told Variety: “Jim said, ‘I don’t think I can continue on.’ And I was so shocked that I was literally like, ‘Continue on with what?’ Like, I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I looked at Chuck: ‘Wow. I thought we were — I’m so blown away right now.’” Miriam Bialik added that the decision to end the show had not been an easy one and that there were “a lot of factors that the public doesn’t get to know about.”
