Young Sheldon Producer Defends Mary & Missy’s Gloomy Series Finale Fates

Producer Steve Holland argues in favor of Mary and Missy’s contentious Young Sheldon endings. The family comedy/drama wraps up important storylines in its last hour, first addressing the fallout from George’s untimely death and then laying the groundwork for Sheldon’s future—by the end of the episode, he formally moves to Pasadena, California. The futures of other members of his family were left undetermined, even though the spinoff ended with the child genius at the start of his journey on The Big Bang Theory. It makes sense that some devoted series viewers found this upsetting.
Missy and Mary’s character endings are two of the most contentious in Young Sheldon. The mother and daughter were not given the right closure at the conclusion of the family comedy/drama. In response to a question regarding it in a recent interview with TVLine, Holland claims that both of their Young Sheldon finale outcomes were reasonable. See his entire statement below:
“To me, it doesn’t feel like a dark place to leave her. It feels real. She’s still grieving the death of George and she has turned to religion. She says ‘Jesus is helping me through it,’ and I don’t think that that’s a depressing place to leave her. We don’t leave her bouncing back from the death of [her husband], but that also just didn’t feel real to us.
“We know from Big Bang that she goes off the rails a little bit in the wake of George’s death, so it’s hinting at that future for Missy but also trying not to leave her in such a dark place that it’s just depressing. She’s obviously angry, and she’s grieving, and that also felt real, but we didn’t want to leave her in a really grim place at the end of this show.”
The Big Bang Theory spinoff has risen to the top of the TV comedy rankings, consistently dominating the charts. The reason Young Sheldon wrapped up was because of the existing canon, which had already decided the project’s inevitable conclusion when Sheldon relocated to California for his doctoral studies. Unfortunately, the writers had to cut or hurry numerous plots due to the show is shorter runtime. Given that Sheldon is the show is main character, a significant portion of the screen time was spent to him, giving Missy and Mary a lackluster farewell.
The incomplete storylines of the characters can yet be addressed. The plot will officially continue with Georgie and Mandy’s spinoff series, Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage, following the Young Sheldon conclusion. Raegan Revord and Zoe Perry have not yet been confirmed to appear, but since The Big Bang Theory canon requires Georgie to stay in touch with his mother and sister, it would not be difficult to bring them both in, even as recurrent guest characters. Even while their tale will not be the main emphasis of the offshoot, it is still a simple method to answer the complaints about Mary and Missy’s conclusion.
Since the Young Sheldon follow-up series’ filming is not scheduled to begin until this summer, the writers still have time to include Mary and Missy in the narrative. Revord, Perry, Montana Jordan, and Emily Osment have a well-established relationship, so adding them would help ensure that the pair is surrounded by a strong group of people. If not, the outcomes for Missy and Mary will rank among the worst blunders in an otherwise fantastic Young Sheldon finale.
